Shadow Work for Beginners: A Gentle Guide to Meeting Your Hidden Self

Shadow Work for Beginners: A Gentle Guide to Meeting Your Hidden Self

🌑 Everyone has a basement. It's where we put the things we weren't allowed to be: the anger, the neediness, the "too much" and "not enough." Shadow work is the practice of going down there with a candle, being curious and not judging what you find. Spoiler: it's usually less scary than the door made it look.

What is shadow work?

The shadow is a term from psychologist Carl Jung. It means the parts of ourselves we reject or push out of sight. In Jung's view the shadow isn't only the "bad" stuff either. It can also hold good qualities, like instincts, creativity and honest reactions we learned to hide. Shadow work is the practice of bringing those parts into the light so you can decide what to do with them. In witchcraft circles it often comes with candles, crystals and a journal. Think of it as a conversation with yourself, not a battle.

Why now?

Samhain has just passed, and Mercury stays retrograde in Scorpio until Nov 13. It's the season for looking back and facing what you've avoided. Our Mercury retrograde guide and Samhain guide pair well with this one.

Gentle ground rules

  • 🕯️ Start small. One question, one candle, ten minutes.
  • 🌿 Stay in your body. If something feels intense, put your feet on the floor, breathe slowly and take a break.
  • 🖤 Be kind to what you find. You're listening, not prosecuting.
  • 💜 Know when to ask for help. Shadow work is a spiritual and reflective practice. It isn't a substitute for therapy. If your journaling brings up trauma or very painful memories, please talk to a therapist or counselor. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 any time.

A first practice (about 15 minutes)

  1. 🕯️ Light a black candle on a heat-safe surface. Our Protection Power Votive is $4.99. Never leave a flame unattended.
  2. 🖤 Hold a piece of obsidian and take three slow breaths.
  3. 📓 Pick one prompt and write for ten minutes without editing:
    • What emotion do I avoid feeling the most?
    • What did I learn I wasn't allowed to be?
    • Who do I judge harshly, and what might that be showing me?
    • What would I do if no one were watching?
    • What part of me has been asking for attention?
  4. 🌙 Read it back. Underline one line that surprised you.
  5. 💜 Close by holding amethyst for a moment and thanking the part of you that showed up. Then snuff the candle.
