🎃 Every October somebody in the shop asks, "So what's the difference between Halloween and Samhain?" Honest answer: less than you'd think.

What is Samhain?

Samhain (say it "SAH-win") is an old Gaelic festival that marks the end of the harvest and the start of the darker half of the year. It's traditionally celebrated from sunset on October 31st through November 1st. A lot of what we do on Halloween, like costumes, bonfires, and treats left out for visitors, has roots in Samhain customs and the folk traditions that grew around it.

The big idea people connect with Samhain is that the veil between our world and the spirit world is at its thinnest. In folk tradition, that made it a night for honoring the dead, welcoming ancestors home, and trying a little divination to see what the coming year might bring.

Today it's one of the eight sabbats on the modern pagan Wheel of the Year. For a lot of witches it's the big one: part new year, part family reunion with the ones who came before.

A simple ancestor altar (you can set this up tonight)

You don't need anything fancy. Here's an easy setup:

  1. Pick a spot. A shelf, a windowsill, or the corner of a dresser works.
  2. Add photos or keepsakes of loved ones who've passed. Grandma's ring, a recipe card in her handwriting, a dog collar. Pets count.
  3. Light a candle. A black candle is traditional for this time of year, and a white one works too. Our Ancestor Power Votive is a natural fit here.
  4. Leave an offering. Pour a little of what they loved: coffee, whiskey, tea, a piece of their favorite candy. Apples and bread are classic Samhain offerings.
  5. Say hi. Tell them what's going on in your life. Some folks set an extra plate at dinner, called a "dumb supper," and eat in silence to honor the dead.

Leave it up through November 1st or 2nd (Día de los Muertos falls right after), then take things down with a thank-you.

Divination on Samhain

Since the veil is said to be thin, Samhain has long been a night for fortune-telling. Old Irish and Scottish customs used apples and nuts to predict love and luck. Today you're more likely to see:
