Orthoclase belongs to the feldspar mineral family and has been valued for centuries both spiritually and industrially. Its name comes from the Greek words orthos meaning “straight” and klasis meaning “fracture,” referencing the mineral’s distinctive cleavage angles.
Orthoclase is one of the primary minerals found in granite and many igneous rocks, and certain varieties are highly prized in jewelry and lapidary work. It is also closely connected to Moonstone, which forms from layers of Orthoclase and Albite. Throughout history, feldspar minerals have been associated with creativity, abundance, and stabilizing Earth energies.
Orthoclase is a potassium aluminum silicate mineral in the feldspar group with a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale. It commonly forms in granite, pegmatites, and other igneous rocks and may appear in shades of cream, peach, tan, pink, white, and gray. Some specimens display a soft pearly or shimmering appearance.
Notable deposits are found in Brazil, Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Germany, and the United States.
