Fluorite is a naturally occurring calcium fluoride mineral known for its vibrant range of colors and stunning transparency. Often called the “Genius Stone,” Fluorite has long been associated with focus, learning, mental clarity, and energetic cleansing. Many specimens naturally fluoresce under UV light, giving this crystal an extra layer of fascination for collectors and crystal enthusiasts alike. Each tumbled Fluorite stone is unique in color, pattern, and shape.
Fluorite History and Uses:
Fluorite derives from the Latin word “fluor” or “fluere”, meaning to flow because when melted it is used as a flux in iron smelting. In the 16th century Agricola, a German scientist named it fluorspar from the German “flusse” (stream, river) and “spar” from “spærstān” (spear stone) a mineral similar to gypsum referring to its crystal projections. Flourite can be found in all the colors of the rainbow plus pink, brown, black, white and clear. Due to the presence of europium, yttrium, ytterbium, or organic matter in Fluorite it can fluoresce blue, red, purple, yellow, green or white under UV light and in 1852 when the phenomenon of fluorescence was discovered it was named after Fluorite. It is also a source of hydrogen fluoride, which is chemically converted into fluorine, fluorocarbons, and a diverse range of fluoride materials.
Fluorite Geological Description:
Fluorite is a calcium fluoride crystal with a hardness of 4. It can be found in a wide variety of colors, often in the same specimen. Major deposits of Fluorite are found in Germany, England, China, Argentina and the USA.
