Bumble Bee Jasper History and Uses: Bumblebee Jasper has been known only since the late 1990s. It is named for its alternating yellow, orange, and black layers that resemble the coloration of certain bees. Bumblebee Jasper has been found only on the Indonesian island Java. Bumble Bee Jasper originates from Mount Papandayan, which is just over nine miles from the town of Garut in West Java, Indonesia. The mountain stands 8,743 feet high and is one of the tallest volcanoes in Indonesia. It is susceptible to eruptions and dangerous gas emissions, making mining difficult.
Bumblebee Jasper Geological Description: Bumblebee Jasper is not a true jasper because it does not consist primarily of microcrystalline quartz. It is a technically a sedimentary rock that contains varying amounts of sulfur, manganese oxides, the arsenic-sulfide minerals realgar and orpiment, and the calcium-carbonate minerals calcite and aragonite. It forms in volcanic fumarole environments and is a porous, layered, multicolored rock that is cemented together by carbonate minerals. Its yellow layers are due to sulfur, orange to arsenic sulfide minerals, and the black to manganese oxides. Bumblebee Jasper has a Mohs hardness of about 4.0.
Formation: Bumblebee Jasper is formed from a mixture of Indonesian volcano lava and sediment. They form around fumaroles, cracks in the earth where volcanic steam and gas escapes. During the rainy season in Indonesia, fumaroles turn into boiling mud pools.
Mining:The only known location for Bumblebee Jasper is found on or near Mount Papandayan, an active volcano in Indonesia. The deposit(s) are hidden in the jungle and primarily mined using basic hand tools. At least one of the mines can only be reached by hiking on foot.
